Partnership with Kaiser Permanente to Develop Physician Leaders - Richard Isaacs MD

Drexel’s College of Medicine has partnered with Kaiser Permanente in California to help ensure a strong physician workforce for the future and to further develop emerging health care leaders for the Sacramento region.

This summer, as many as 16 third-year medical students from the College of Medicine will begin a year of clinical rotations at Kaiser Permanente medical centers in Sacramento, South Sacramento, Roseville and Vallejo.

The medical students will do rotations in pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, surgery, outpatient psychiatry, family medicine and adult medicine.

"Drexel University College of Medicine represents a longstanding commitment to excellence in medical education and Kaiser Permanente embraces this opportunity to partner with their faculty in bringing top-notch emerging physicians to the Sacramento region. We know that many of these students will choose to live and practice right here in our own community," said Dr. Richard Isaacs, physician-in-chief, South Sacramento.

"We're delighted to have our students participate in this partnership program and have the opportunity to learn about the unique model of care at Kaiser Permanente," said Dr. Barbara Schindler, professor and vice dean for educational and academic affairs for the College of Medicine.

Premed students attending the Drexel campus in Sacramento have already had opportunities to observe Kaiser Permanente's model of care through a unique 10-week physician shadowing program that was started in March 2011. Drexel's Interdepartmental Medical Science program is one of very few such programs in the country. This is the first time the program was taught outside of Philadelphia.

"Our physicians are really excited about welcoming and training this first group of medical students who are expected to arrive in late June and begin their clinical rotations on July 1st," said Dr. Lisa Liu, South Sacramento's assistant physician-in-chief of health promotion who is spearheading the training program. "It's a great opportunity to expose medical students to the power and integration of Kaiser Permanente and to showcase how we truly are the model for health care in this country."

Kaiser Permanente and Drexel are also proud to co-sponsor the Sacramento Metro Chamber's 2013 study mission, taking place this September in Philadelphia.

DR. RICHARD ISAACS: CELEBRATING KAISER PERMANENTE AS REGIONAL MEDICAL CAMPUS

Kaiser Permanente and Drexel University College of Medicine are celebrating the success of their unique partnership by designating Kaiser Permanente in Greater Sacramento as a regional medical campus for Drexel.

The relationship between the two organizations began in 2008 with a pre-med program and went to the next level in the summer of 2013 when the first group of medical students from Drexel's Philadelphia-based medical school began a year of clinical rotations at Kaiser Permanente medical centers in greater Sacramento and the surrounding region. Since that time, the program has grown, with new groups of Drexel students getting the opportunity to train alongside Kaiser Permanente physicians and learn about KP's unique model of integrated care.

Under the new regional medical campus designation, Drexel medical students have the option to select Kaiser Permanente as their primary clinical campus and complete all of their required clinical rotations during their third and fourth years. Kaiser Permanente will provide the full complement of training in core clinical areas. This year, 16 Drexel College of Medicine students are completing rotations at four medical centers: Sacramento, South Sacramento, Roseville and Vacaville. The regional campus designation covers several Kaiser Permanente facilities.

"This partnership has proven to be a wonderful opportunity for our students to get exposure to Kaiser Permanente's unique model of health care delivery while also receiving an outstanding clinical education," said Valerie Weber, MD, vice dean for educational affairs at Drexel University College of Medicine. "The students who have already participated in the program have had a fantastic experience at Kaiser Permanente and we're excited that more of our students will have that opportunity."

As regional medical campus, Kaiser Permanente expects to attract more emerging physicians to the Greater Sacramento region who will want to live and practice in the area after receiving their medical degree.

Richard Isaacs, MD, physician-in chief for Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento, said, "Kaiser Permanente is transforming care delivery. We know exposure to our model of care, expertise, technology and facilities is showing Drexel's medical students the best the medical community has to offer and we are excited to expand our partnership with Drexel University."

Drexel has appointed Lisa Liu, MD, who is a South Sacramento assistant physician-in-chief, as associate dean of the regional medical campus.

Outstanding care from an outstanding individual

Dr. Isaacs did a phenomenal job caring for our daughter who had a very complex skull base lesion. It was a tumor of the nerve to her tongue and the tumor had grown quickly against the bone of the nerve's canal in the skull. We were so nervous and Dr. Isaacs caring and compassionate approach put us all at ease, especially our daughter. The results of the surgery were exceptional. We highly recommend Dr. Isaacs. Dr. Isaacs has advanced skill and training. We were very fortunate to have been referred to him.

While there is no proven correlation between the quality of one's educational institution and the quality of one's professional competence, it is often an indicator. Medical schools have various levels of selectivity (some are harder to get into than others), and both the quality of their clinical training and level of research are measured. Additional medical training in both residency and fellowships and the facilities they are conducted at also provide a history of the doctors' level of training and experience.
